KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — With the euphoria of the Rio Olympics fizzling out, mixed doubles shuttlers Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying are now focusing their attention on qualifying for the Dubai World Superseries Finals in December.

In their first match at the Japan Open yesterday, the duo beat England’s Matthew Nottingham and Emily Westwood 21-13, 21-15.

"It was an easy win on our first competitive match after the Olympics and we want to win tournaments just as much as the Olympics,” said Peng Soon.

"I know the pressure may be on us since we managed a silver from the Olympics, but as long as we focus and don’t get too stressed out, then everything should be fine,” he added.

Today, the pair meet Holland’s Jacco Arends and Selena Piek.

Liu Ying said the most important thing was to not be overly confident.

"It’s good to be back on court, but my movement on court isn’t as good as in previous tournaments, so I need to work on that,” she said.

"The most important thing to play to the best of our abilities.

"We will give our best and try to reach the final in Dubai this year,” she said.  First to bow out of competition was Goh Soon Huat on Tuesday, followed by Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin yesterday.

Men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong made it to the next round by beating Thailand’s Bodin Isara and Nipitphon Phuangphuapet 21-12, 21-17. They face China’s Huang Kaixiang-Wang Yilyu today.

In men’s singles competition, Lee Chong Wei breezed through his first match against Boonsak Ponsana 21-14, 21-13, while women’s pair Vivian Hoo and Woon Khe Wei beat Japan’s Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara 21-19, 21-12.

Chong Wei will meet China’s Qiao Bin while the Vivian and Khe Wei will meet Japan’s Miki Kashihara and Miyuki Kato.
