Tough going for cyclist Khairul Hazwan at Rio Paralympics

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — The cycling events of the Paralympic Games  in Rio de Janeiro which came to a close yesterday, saw tandem highway cyclist Mohd Khairul Hazwan Wahab completing the overall race in 14th spot.

In the 99km men’s category B (visually impaired) in Pontal, Mohd Khairul Hazwan who was assisted by guide Muhamad Rauf Nur Misbah clocked 2 hours 41 minutes and 52 seconds.

Based on the time recorded, Mohd Khairul Hazwan was 18:22.00s behind the leader and gold medallist, Vincent Ter Schure of Netherlands in 2’26:33s.

The silver medal went to Ignacio Avila Rodriguez of Spain with the same time while Steve Bate of Great Britain took the bronze in 2’27:03s.

Meanwhile, it was also curtains down for the sailing events at Marina Da Gloria, Fort Copacabana and Malaysian sailor Al Mustakim Matrin ended the Single-Person Keelboat (2.4mR) B2 (physical impairment) category also in 14th place with penalty 131 points after 11 races.

In the last race yesterday, the Incheon Asian Para Games silver medallist was in 15th spot with a time of 43.31s.

The gold medal was won by Damien Seguin of France with 30 penalty points while the silver and bronze medals went to Matthew Bugg (Australia) and Helena Lucas (Great Britain) respectively (36 and 39 penalty points).

Men and women participants are combined in the Single-Person Keelboat (2.4mR) B2 event.

Based on the medal tally, the national contingent were now placed 35th after garnering three gold medals and a bronze.

All the medals were in athletics via Mohamad Ridzuan Mohamad Puzi, Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli, Abdul Latif Romly and Siti Noor Radiah Ismail.

The Rio Paralympic Games will come to a close officially tonight (early morning Malaysia time) with athletics, wheelchair rugby and sitting volleyball to be contested in the morning session. — Bernama
