KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — Reigning world junior champion, Nouran Gohar of Egypt has spoiled Malaysia’s squash queen Datuk Nicol David’s birthday joy when she defeated her in the semi-finals of the 2016 Hong Kong Open squash championship today.
The 18-year-old fifth seeded stormed into the final after knocking out Nicol who turned 33 yesterday, with a 11-9, 11-7, 11-13 and 11-9 win after a 57-minute battle.
"I can’t believe it, it’s like a dream. I came here with no expectation, but to beat Nicol, she’s a legend,” she said in the tournament Twitter today.
Yesterday, Gohar created the biggest upset when she knocked out world number two Laura Massaro of England 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 8-11, 14-12 in 80 minutes.
Gohar will be meeting Amanda Sobhy of the United States of America (USA) in the final tomorrow.
Earlier, Sobhy cruised into the finals after creating another big upset by knocking out world number one Nour El Sherbini of Egypt, in straight sets, 12-10, 11-5, 11-6 over 33 minutes. — Bernama
