KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — BA of Malaysia (BAM) has confirmed Lee Chong Wei will not feature at the Taiwan Open (June 28 to July 3) due to a hip injury he sustained at the Indonesia Open last month.

The world No 1, who also withdrew from the Australian Open (June 7 to 12), was advised by his coach Hendrawan and physiotherapist Sandra Fiedler to take a break from tournaments.

The Penangite is adhering to the advice, considering the Rio Olympics is barely two months away.

“Chong Wei will not play at the Taiwan Open as he has not fully recovered from his hip injury in Indonesia,” said BAM technical director Morten Frost, who added the shuttler’s preparations for the Olympics has been smooth.

“The players have been hardworking and composed. We are still deciding on the sparring partners for the Olympics. We have also requested for more entry passes for the sparring partners from the Olympic Council of Malaysia as we only have two day passes for them at present,” he said.

The sparring partners for the Olympic-shuttlers will be decided later this month.

World junior champion Goh Jin Wei will head the team at the Asian Junior Championships (July 9 to 12) in Bangkok.

“We have the best squad except for the girls’ doubles. We are only sending one pair because the rest are not up to par,” said men’s singles coach Indra Wijaya, who said they can reach the semifinals.

The Indonesian also tipped Jin Wei to go all the way in the individual event, which begins from July 13 to 17.

“Based on Jin Wei’s form, she should win all her matches in the team and
individual events.

“I am worried about Japan’s Natsuki Nidairi and Thailand, who are strong in the boys singles,” said Indra.

Malaysia lost 3-0 to China in last year’s quarterfinals when the tournament was also held in Bangkok.
