KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Just when you thought Malaysian football could not sink any lower, along comes a match that shows just how bad we are.
Consider this awful outcome: Papua New Guinea 2 Malaysia 0.
Yes, you read that right ... Papua New Guinea, world No 193 and 20 places below Malaysia, won 2-0 at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby, thanks to a double from forward Tommy Semmy who scored in the 35th and 42nd minutes.
Who would have thought Malaysia would lose but considering recent results, it comes as no surprise.
We thought Malaysian football had hit the floor with the 10-0 thrashing by Saudi Arabia last September but this defeat is just as devastating.
The disappointing result saw coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee blow his top.
“It is disappointing some players didn’t show character and help each other. The second half proved that even with 10 men we can play better if the players have the mentality of wanting to do something,” said Kim Swee, referring to Shahrom Abdul Kalam’s injury in the 66th minute after he had used all his substitutes.
Kim Swee made the maximum six substitutions allowed for an international A friendly but strangely, did not introduce the in-form Ahmad Hazwan Bakri who had scored three goals in his previous two matches.
“Some players took it easy after the wins over Timor Leste (Asian Cup playoffs). Those given a chance again in the remainder of the tour must show their worth if they want to remain in the squad.”
Malaysia had thrashed Timor Leste 6-0 on aggregate in an Asian Cup playoff earlier this month.
“Among the goals for our trip are to improve our ranking, tighten our game and get results ... we didn’t do all that. But I believe we’ll get something positive before the end of this trip.”
Harimau Malaysia will play New Caledonia (Wednesday) and Fiji (June 26) before returning home.
