Discus thrower Irfan sets new national mark in Germany

KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 — National discus thrower Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin bettered his own national record after posting a distance of 58.33 metres at a competition in Germany today.

The 20-year-old athlete who set the previous national record in the men’s discus throw with a distance 58.04m during the 92nd Malaysian Open last year, however, finished fourth in the event.

Sven Martin Skagestad of Norway bagged the gold with a throw of 62.59m, while Sweden’s Simon Petterson and Henning Prufeg of Germany took second and third places respectively with 60.72m and 59.92m. 

During the event, Muhammad Irfan posted 58.21m in the first throw before achieving 58.33m in the sixth and final throw. — Bernama
