SHAH ALAM, May 6 — National coach Paul Birmingham believes it is near impossible for his charges to clock Olympic A time at the Malaysia Open Championships.
Though he has not made any target, the Australian is impressed his swimmers, especially rising star Welson Sim, have “personal missions” to accomplish over the next three days.
Welson is the only swimmer to have secured two Rio Olympic A tickets in 200m and 400m freestyle. He also met the B time in the 100m free.
However, the Sarawakian is not done as he aims to hit the A time in the 1,500m freestyle.
“We were looking forward to this meet,” said Birmingham.
“I don’t want to add pressure on my swimmers but I can see in their eyes the determination to get something here. Welson also trained hard for this.
“But I’d be happy if they can at least clock an Olympic B time.”
The B time holders need to wait for world body Fina to release the final list in July before they can find out if they get to compete in Rio.
Men swimmers who made the B cut are Kevin Yeap (400m free), Yeap Zheng Yang (200m free) and Wong Fu Kang (100m breaststroke). Women swimmers awaiting Fina’s list are Chui Lai Kwan (50m free), Khoo Cai Lin (400m free) and Phee Jinq En (100m breaststroke).
The next and last Olympic qualifiers would be at the Mare Nostrum Circuit in Europe from June 4-12.
