Only Chong Wei left fighting for Malaysia in Badminton Asia tourney

The fourth seed overpowered Hong Kong’s Vincent Wong Wing Ki, 23-21, 21-12. Chong Wei now ranked world number two will meet sixth seed Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan who subdued Takuma Ueda of Japan, 21-18, 21-13.  Meanwhile professional player Zulfadli Zulkiffli went down tamely to world number one Chen Long 12-21, 10-21 in the second round today.     

Top seed Chen Long will meet seventh seed Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia who had earlier cut short the progress of Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana with a 21-17, 21-9 victory.

In the doubles, national mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing failed to advance after losing to China’s Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei, 21-10, 21-12. 

In the quarter-finals, the top seeds will meet South Korea’s Kim Gi Jung/Shin Seung Chan who disposed off Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto of Indonesia, 21-17 and 22-20. Top national women’s doubles pair, Vivian Hoo/Woon Khei Wei who received a ‘bye’ yesterday, failed to qualify for the quarter-finals after losing to third seeds Nitya Krishinda Maheswari/Gresysia Polii of Indonesia 21-18, 20-22 and 11-21.   Meanwhile, Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong were bundled off by Japan’s Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda in straight sets, 13-21, 18-21. ― Bernama
