PETALING JAYA, April 23 — S. Sivasangari gained the ideal preparation for the Women’s World Championship (WWC) that starts today (April 23-30) after bagging her third consecutive Malaysian Squash Tour title yesterday.

The Kedahan, who won the previous two legs in Malacca and Royal Lake Club last week was again in imperious form, defeating Hong Kong’s Vanessa Chu 11-7, 7-11, 13-11, 11-9.

“My strategy was to play it safe against Vanessa, because she’s the top seed in the competition. I was patient in the final points and waited for her to make mistakes when she tried to go for the kill,” said Sivasangari, who takes on Egypt’s Nadine Shahin in the WWC first-round qualifiers today.

“She’s a good player and is ranked higher than me as well, but I am confident after this win and will give my best. It will be tough, but I am hoping my form can take me into the main draw,” added the Commonwealth Youth Games champion.

The other national players competing in the qualifiers are Zoe Foo, Aika Azman, Teh Min Jie, Rachel Arnold, Andrea Lee, Nazihah Hanis and Vanessa Raj.

Low Wee Wern meanwhile has not set herself any target for the WCW after recently returning from a year’s layoff from injury.

The Penangite had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in April last year and is still feeling her way back to full fitness, but was honoured to be given a wildcard at the event.

“I am delighted to be given an opportunity to play the world’s best and will do my best despite not being back at full fitness. To have the tournament back in Malaysia is a big deal as we have already lost the KL Open and Malaysia Open,” said the world No. 42, who will play New Zealand’s Joelle King in the first round.

“Joelle is a top 10 player now (ninth) who is back for a full year after her fair share of injuries. To get past her would be a big bonus, as I am just aiming to play competitively again,” said Wee Wern.

The other national players in the main draw on Monday are Nicol David, who will take on Australian veteran Rachael Grinham, while Delia Arnold faces a qualifier.
