Low Wee Wern keen to play again after knee surgery

KOTA KINABALU, April 17 — Malaysia’s number three squash player Low Wee Wern is keen to return to the courts and start playing competitively again after undergoing a knee surgery about a year ago.

Wee Wern said she has to learn how to walk again after being in a wheelchair and crutches for about a month after surgery from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in 2015.

“It has been a difficult process. I am not in tip top condition but I have been playing a little bit of squash and starting to regain competitive level.

“Physically, I am not totally pain free but mentally I am more than ready to get back onto the court. My main goal is to start playing competitively again before I start aiming to win tournaments,” she told Bernama yesterday.

Wee Wern, a sports ambassador for Herbalife, is here to conduct fundraising efforts for non-profit organisation Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF).

She is competing in the Women’s World Championships (WWC) from April 23-30 at the National Sports Centre, Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur.

“I will definitely be playing in the WWC because it is held in Malaysia,” said the former world number five player.

Wee Wern expects a busy schedule in the second half of 2016 with plans to play in the Hong Kong Open, China Open and Macau Open, among others, as she“missed out so much” and wanted to “make up for lost time.”

She will travel to Dalian, China and Macau in June in her capacity as World Squash Federation (WSF) ambassador together with Malaysia’s former world number seven, Ong Beng Hee to promote squash as part of a campaign for squash to be incorporated into the Olympic Games.

A total of 56 players from 19 countries will be competing in the Women’s World Championships with a US$185,000 (RM721,638) prize money and a Citroen DS4 car up for grabs. — Bernama
