Malaysian pair Shem-Wee Kiong in India Open quarterfinals

KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 — Top Malaysian men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong cruised into the quarterfinals of the India Open Super Series at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium in New Delhi today to boost their chances of qualifying for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

The 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning pair defeated China’s Wang Yilyu/Zhang Wen in straight sets 21-18, 21-16 in the second round, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website. www.bwfbadminton.org.

The world number 14-ranked pair will next take on the winners of the match between Mads Conrad-Petersen/Mads Pieler Kolding of Denmark and Bodin Issara/Nipitphon Puangpuapech of Thailand.

Luck was not in favour of former national pair Hoon Thien How/Teo Kok Siang, who lost 19-21, 13-21 to fifth-seeded Ko Sung Hyun/Shin Baek Cheol of South Korea.

World number three Datuk Lee Chong Wei, who is vying for his fourth India Open title after wins in 2011, 2013 and 2014, will face Hong Kong’s Thomas Cupper Wei Nan in a second-round match later today after disposing of Kazumasa Sakai of Japan 21-11, 21-17 yesterday.

Malaysia did not send representatives in the women’s singles and doubles and also mixed doubles.

The tournament offers total prize money of US$300,000 (RM1.2 million). — Bernama
