Pandelela falls short at Beijing World Series

PETALING JAYA, March 14 — There was no cheer for the national contingent on the final day of the World Series after Pandelela Rinong failed to qualify for the 10m platform final in Beijing yesterday.

The 23-year-old garnered 286.20 points for a fourth-placed finish in the first semifinal.

Only the top three qualified for the final.

Pandelela’s failure to make the cut in her pet event meant the diving squad only returned with a bronze in the 10m platform synchro through Pandelela and Leong Mun Yee on Friday.

Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) secretary general, Mae Chen, said the association hoped to win more medals in the remaining legs.

“We are very happy with Pandelela-Mun Yee for winning the bronze.

“It’s a huge boost for Mun Yee to step up onto the podium this year,” said Mae, who added the pair, who had not trained together for seven months before the World Series, will head to Dubai, United Arab Emirates for the second leg which starts on Thursday and ends on Saturday.

The World Series will then head to Windsor, Canada (April 15-17) and Kazan, Russia (April 22-24).

Pandelela had won bronze in the same event at the World Championships in Kazan last year, but finished fourth at the World Cup in Rio last month.
