PETALING JAYA, March 9 — Ahmad Amsyar Azman’s hopes making it to the Olympics hit a snag as he did not make the final list of the individual 3m springboard to Rio.
“The letter is out and Amsyar didn’t get the 3m springboard spot. Unless someone else declines he won’t get the chance to compete,” said Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) secretary-general Mae Chen yesterday.
The Perlis- born diver had been within a shout to make it to the Games after seven of the top 18 divers at the World Cup in Brazil last month had already qualified last year.
But there may be a silver lining for the 24-year-old, who finished 24th in the 3m springboard preliminaries at the World Cup as Asum can use their powers to send him to Rio along with Ooi Tze Liang, who is the only male diver to qualify
for the Olympics.
“Asum could send Amsyar to Rio to compete in 3m springboard instead of Tze Liang, who then can focus on the 10m platform,” explained Mae.
Malaysia booked three slots to the Olympics at the World Cup through Pandelela Rinong-Cheong Jun Hoong (10m platform synchro), Jun Hoong-Nur Dhabitah Sabri (3m springboard synchro) and Jun Hoong (3m springboard individual).
Before the World Cup, the national divers secured five individual spots through Tze Liang (men’s 3m springboard and 10m platform), Wendy Ng (women’s 3m springboard), Nur Dhabitah (women’s 10m platform) and Pandelela (women’s 10m platform) last year.
