PETALING JAYA, Feb 19 — Goh Jin Wei stunned world No 11 Yu Sun in straight games at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Hyderabad, India, yesterday but it was not enough as Malaysia fell 4-1 in a Group A match.

Jin Wei’s 21-12, 21-16 victory stole the thunder as the Thailand Masters champion was expected to brush her aside.

The 16-year-old world junior champion, however, had other ideas and showed maturity beyond her years as she toyed with her 22-year-old opponent before going for the kill.

It was Jin Wei’s second win in the competition as she had defeated Hong Kong’s Ng Wing Yung 21-6 21-13 on Tuesday to give Malaysia a 3-2 win.

That victory also assured Malaysia of a place in the quarterfinals.

“I’m very happy to have delivered a point. This is a big win for me,” said Jin Wei.

Former world No 1 Wang Shixian gave China the lead when she outclassed Ho Yen Mei 21-19, 21-12 while first pair Amelia Alicia Anscelly-Vivian Hoo Kah Mun put up a fight before falling 21-14, 21-11 to world No 1 Luo Ying-Luo Yu.

Jin Wei then gave Malaysia something to cheer about before the gloom returned when Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean had to retire against Tang Yuanting-Yu Yang when Mei Kuan twisted her ankle. The Malaysians were losing 18-10 in the first game.

Chen Yufei then wrapped up the tie with a comprehensive 21-14, 21-6 victory over Lee Ying Ying.

Thailand, Taiwan (Group B), South Korea, Indonesia (Group C), Japan and India (Group D) also made it to the quaterfinals.

Meanwhile, in the men’s competition, India stunned China 3-2 to take top spot in Group A while China finished runners-up.

Malaysia finished runners-up to Japan in Group B while the other quarterfinalists for the men’s competition are Indonesia, Taiwan (Group C), South Korea and Taiwan (Group D).

The quarterfinals will be played today.
