Malaysia’s sole representative at Winter Youth Olympics finishes 11th in skating

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 — Chew Kai Xiang, Malaysia’s sole representative at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer in Norway, finished 11th in the men’s figure skating event today. Japan’s Sota Yamamota clinched the gold medal with 215.52 points while the silver and bronze medals were won by Latvia’s Dennis Vasiljevs (214.43) and Russia’s Dmitri Aliev (209.77).

In the short programme event held on February 13, Chew, 16, accumulated 46.53 points. With the 90.94 points in the free skating event today, he totalled 137.47 points.

Sixteen participants took part in the competition.

Chew won the International Skating Union (ISU) World Figure Skating Development Trophy for the Asian region held in Kuala Lumpur, and was the runner-up of the Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy in Bangkok last year. — Bernama
