KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 — Captains of the EurAsia Cup 2016 last month will cross paths once more in Kuala Lumpur in two weeks. Darren Clarke of Ireland and Jeev Milkha Singh of India will tee up at the inaugural Maybank Championship Malaysia golf tournament from February 18-21.
Other members of the winning Team Europe at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in January who have confirmed their participation at the Maybank tournament are Matthew Fitzpatrick of England and Victor Dubuisson of France.
“The presence of these four renowned players adds to the attraction of the player field,” said Maybank chairman Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor. “I am pleased that so far, seven of the world top 50 ranked players will be at the tournament,” he said in a press conference here today after unveiling the trophy, a collaboration of Maybank and Royal Selangor.
Present was Tan Sri Yong Poh Kon, chairman of Royal Selangor International Sdn Bhd.
Others in the stellar cast at the tournament are Martin Kaymer, Louis Oosthuizen, Danny Willett, Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat.
The event to be played at the Royal Selangor Golf Club offers total prize money of US$3 million (RM12.9 million) and would have a field of 156 players from around the world.
The Maybank Championship Malaysia will be one of six events at which the European Tour members will participate in the Asian region. It is one of four tournaments also co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour in 2016.
The trophy was conceptualised by Maybank and created by Royal Selangor. It is a modern sculptural art form of the tiger, symbol of Maybank, crafted out of pewter on a wooden base and weighs about 5kg. — Bernama
