LONDON, Oct 31 — Handre Pollard’s 14 points provided the backbone to South Africa’s 24-13 win over Argentina and the small consolation of taking third at the Rugby World Cup yesterday.
The 21-year-old fly-half — who converted JP Pietersen and Eben Etzebeth’s tries — had to give second best though to Argentinian captain and fly-half Nicolas Sanchez.
Sanchez eight points were enough to keep him as top scorer for the tournament with 97 while Pollard finishes with 93.
Australian fly-half Bernard Foley could yet get past Sanchez but he would need to score 23 points in the final with arch-rivals and defending champions New Zealand at Twickenham today — All Blacks legend Dan Carter would need an unlikely 35. — AFP
