TAIPEI, July 16 ― Lee Chong Wei had no problems brushing aside South Korea’s Kim Dong-hoon 21-10, 21-7 in the Taiwan badminton Open opening round as he gears up for the World Championships next month.
The 33-year-old, who left for the tournament a day after second son Terrance Lee was born, wants to use the tournament as a final tune-up to the championships in Jakarta from August 10-16.
Lee faces Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto next in a tournament that includes China’s Chen Long and Lin Dan.
Joining Lee in the second round is Iskandar Zulkarnain, who ousted Japan’s Sho Sasaki 21-15, 17-21, 21-16 to set-up a date with China’s Wang Zheming.
Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng, Goh Soon Huat and Tan Chun Seang meanwhile saw their campaign end abruptly.
Liew lost 21-11, 21-16 to Indonesia’s Hayom Rumbaka while Chong fell 21-17, 21-7 to homester Lu-Chia Hung.
Goh and Tan lost to Chen Long and local favourite Chou Tien-chen respectively.
Other national shuttlers competing include men’s pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, women’s pair Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo and mixed pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying.
