NEW YORK, July 8 — New York City will host a ticker-tape parade on Friday for the US women’s team, which won the World Cup against Japan this past weekend.

The parade will begin at 11am in the Battery and proceed to City Hall, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office said in a statement.

The last such event, for football’s New York Giants after their Super Bowl victory in 2012, attracted about 1 million spectators.

In 2009, the city celebrated baseball’s New York Yankees becoming World Series champions for the 27^th time.

Friday’s parade will be the first to honor a sports team without a New York designation.

The women’s team is made up of players from several states, including four from neighbouring New Jersey.

The route will follow Broadway north from Manhattan’s southern tip in the so-called Canyon of Heroes, which has hosted 205 parades over more than a century.
