SEA Games: News in brief

SINGAPORE, June 9 — Following is a list of brief news involving Malaysian athletes at the 28th SEA Games, yesterday:

Shooting

The shooting squad managed to gun down a bronze medal in the women’s Precision Pistol team event at the National Shooting Centre, here today through Siti Zawiah Mohamed, Norhidayah Mohd Fuad and Khoo Nee Hoe.

The trio gunned down 1,602 points against gold medal winning Thailand trio’s 1,723 points while the Philippines took the silver with 1,700 points.

Sepak Takraw

As expected, Malaysia failed to overcome defending champion Thailand, losing 0-3 in the team event at the Singapore Expo Centre, here today.

Malaysia however, managed to beat Indonesia 2-1 to remain in contention.

Tennis

The men’s and women’s tennis teams earned bronze medals in their respective events as losing semifinalists.

In the men’s event, Mohd Merzuki lost to Wachiramanowong Kittiphong (2-6, 1-6) and Syed Mohamad Agil Syed Naguib lost to Udomchoke Danai (1-6, 0-6) while Ariez Elyaas Deen Heshaam/Muhammad Ashaari Zainal Abidin were defeated by Ratiwatana Sanchai/Ratiwatana Sonchat (1-6, 0-6).

In the women’s event, it was a similar scenario when Thailand’s Lertcheewakarn Noppawan edged Jawariah Noordin (6-3, 6-4) and Varatchaya Wongteanchai disposed S.Theiviya (6-2, 6-0) while Luksika Kumkhum/Tamarine Tanasugarn overcame Jawariah Noordin/Syazlin Yusri. — Bernama
