SEA Games: Budding swimmer claims Malaysia's first swimming gold

SINGAPORE, June 7 — Budding swimmer, Wong Fu Kang clinched Malaysia’s first gold medal from swimming events at the 28th SEA Games, tonight with a splashing display in the men’s 100m breaststroke.

The 16-year-old swimmer also rewrote his national record of 1:02.56s with a new time of 1:02.46s to claim the men’s 100m breaststroke gold.

On March 26, he smashed the 15-year-old men’s National 100m  breaststroke record held by Elvin Chia at the Malaysian Open Swimming Championships.

“I was quite nervous when I managed to earn a spot in the final. This is my first SEA Games gold medal. It was an amazing experience. I really trained hard for these and I am happy with the outcome,” said the Johor lad.

Yesterday he did not win any medal in the 200m breaststroke event and only managed fifth placing with a time of 2:18.51s.

“It was a good learning experience for me. I went out too fast in my first 100m and lost steam,” he said.

The Malaysian swimming squad also won a silver medal in the men’s 4x200m Freestyle relay.

The quartet comprising Daniel Bego, Kevin Yeap, Lim Ching Hwang and Welson Sim clocked 7:30.13s to finish 11.99 seconds behind Singapore’s quartet that set a new Games record of 7:18.14s.

The Singapore quartet rewrote their own record of 7:26.67s set during the 2013 Myanmar SEA Games. — Bernama
