SINGAPORE, June 5 — It was like a scene from a movie when fencer Nurul Affiq Nazril Ismail lost his match for the bronze.
He turned heads when he insisted on competing despite suffering an injury.
He received a roaring ovation at the OCBC Arena yesterday when he fell several times, but forced himself to get up and continued fighting.
“I injured my left knee. It’s an old injury that has haunted me since the Asean University Games last year.
“I’m in pain but I really want to contribute a medal,” said Nurul Affiq, who lost 7-4 to Vietnam’s Minh Quang Nguyen in men’s individual foil.
Coach Tamas Laszlo Medgyes said he was proud of his charge.
“I asked him to stop fighting. But he won’t listen,” he said.
“He insisted on continuing. He failed to win bronze, but to me, he’s a winner.”
