Singaporean Marc Ong wins Malaysia Amateur Golf Open title

KUCHING, May 24 — Singaporean Marc Ong Chong Ching today won the Malaysia Amateur Open Golf Championship 2015 held at the Kuching Golf Club in Petra Jaya here.

The 19-year-old golfer won in style, finishing ahead of 126 competitors with an impressive 275 strokes after four rounds of competition in the 113th edition of the championship.

Marc, a member of the Singapore national team, had last month also won the 2015 Philippines Amateur Open Matchplay Championship held in Dasmarinas in the Philippines.

Coming second was Harrison Endycott from Sydney, who is currently ranked number 128 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR). His compatariot, Justin Warren, came in third.

Top amateur golfers from countries such as Australia, China, the Philippines, India, Myanmar, South Korea, Japan, Bahrain, Thailand, Iran, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia including host Sarawak took part in the four-day competition.

Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who is also the president of the Kuching Golf Club, officiated at the closing and prize presentation ceremony.

He said golfers from far and near were always welcomed at the club course.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Golf Association president Tan Sri Senator Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor said the association had now introduced golf to seven schools in the country under the Education Ministry’s “Golf in School” programme.

“Hopefully we can go to more schools nationwide to introduce and promote the sport in the next few years,” he said. — Bernama
