KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — The national netball squad to the 28th SEA Games in Singapore wants a repeat of its glory moments in 2001 when it won the gold medal in the first ever event held for the sport.
Team manager Zainoor Md Noh said the sport was not included in the games for six times and he hoped it would now be held once again.
“We want to repeat the victory in 2001, but the players must work extra hard to defeat the hosts. I see Singapore as our main competitor now.
“They are at the top of the ranking in Asia, followed by Sri Lanka and Malaysia,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.
Based on the latest rankings by the International Netball Federation (INF) on December 20, 2014, Malaysia is at the 23rd spot while its closest rival, Singapore is at 17th place.
Zainoor said since last Friday until May 27, the players had been undergoing final training at the Paralympic Excellence Centre in Kampung Pandan before departing for Singapore.
Besides Malaysia and Singapore, netball teams from Thailand, Brunei, the Philippines and Myanmar will also be participating in the games, held every two years. — Bernama
