NEW YORK, April 23 — Alex Morgan, Sydney Leroux and Tobin Heath from the US Women’s National team turned out yesterday for a preview of the home kit that the team will be wearing during the Women’s World Cup in Canada.
“This launch has been fantastic and Nike has done a great job kind of reinventing our kits, reinventing this World Cup, we’re able to come out in a completely different look, but a look that we can be proud of,” said midfielder Tobin Heath.
The home kit manufactured by Nike includes white jerseys and shorts with black piping and logos, a far cry from uniforms of the past that draw on the red, white and blue of the US flag. There is a fleeting nod to the flag, though, as the jersey contain a triangular pennant design with 13 white stars, referring to the original US colonies. As for the cleats, here’s the description from a US Football written statement: “The cleats combine flashes of volt yellow with a striking ‘Blue Lagoon’ colour, a not to the famous lakes of 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup host nation Canada.”
Each piece of the home kit was constructed with polyester from recycled plastic bottles.
The US Women’s National team is not only ready to represent the US in the World Cup, but also hopeful that this summer will mark a new era in the sport.
“Our success in the World Cup will do nothing but help the development of women’s football in the US and just the continuation of the league that we have here and the fans that we draw,” said Forward, Alex Morgan.
