From defending Axiata champs, Malaysia lose third placing playoff to Asia All-Stars

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7 — Malaysia’s shuttlers have lost to Asia All-Stars for third placing in the 2014 Axiata Cup Badminton championship.

In the tie played at Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras here today, Malaysia lost on overall points scored.

The two sides were tied 2-2 after each won two of the four matches played. Asia All-Stars won on overall points scored, garnering 147 points to 140 for Malaysia.

“The Axiata Cup was not the primary target of all participating teams but it was useful for players as it involved team play,” said coach Rashid Sidek.

“Overall, I am satisfied with the achievement of our players. We did not put a high target for them. Qualifying for the semi-finals was the best achievement.”

In the decider, both national singles players lost their matches. Men’s singles player Chong Wei Feng, who controlled the game initially, lost his rhythm after stopping several times owing to disturbances over lighting. He lost 20-22, 16-21 to Hu Yun of Hong Kong.

National women’s singles Tee Jing Yi went down tamely to Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan 12-21, 8-21.

Men’s doubles Tan Boon Heong and Tan Wee Kiong defeated Manu Attri and Sunmeeth Reddy of India 21-11, 21-13.

Mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon and Lai Pei Jing beat Lee Chun Hei and Chau Hoi Wah of Hong Kong 21-19, 21-19. — Bernama
