INCHEON, Sept 29 — National divers saved the blushes for the Malaysian contingent by winning a silver and bronze medal at the ongoing Incheon Asian Games hosted by South Korea.
Though there was no golden splash for the Malaysian contingent, the silver and bronze won today helped lift the gloom in the Malaysian camp after an embarrassing defeat in the sepaktakraw event where both the men's and women's Regu lost to South Korea and Japan respectively.
Wendy Ng Yan Yee partnered Cheong Jun Hoong to contribute a silver medal in the women's 3m Springboard Synchronised diving while Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ooi Tze Liang partnered Chew Yiwei to win a bronze medal in the men's 10m Platform Synchronised diving.
Both events were dominated by China when diving events started today.
Tomorrow, Pandelela Rinong and Leong Mun Yee will start their campaign in the 10m Platform Synchronised diving while Tze Liang-Yiwei pair see action in the 3m Springboard Synchronised diving.
There was also no joy at the bowling alley when the men's and women's teams failed to blaze the lanes and finished in 8th and 7th spots respectively but their campaign in the event is not over since there would be back to see action in the second block.
Hopes of winning the country's fourth gold medal now will hinge on sailing since the chances of winning a gold medal in the men's 420 Dinghy sailing event remains bright.
The final two races of the men's 420 Dinghy where Malaysian duo Mohamad Faizal Norizan and Ahmad Syukri Abdul Aziz are on course for a gold medal, was postponed to tomorrow due to bad weather.
Malaysia's hopes of winning medals is also very much alive at the cricket ground and the hockey arena where Malaysia take on Hongkong and Pakistan respectively in semifinal matches.
Meanwhile, China continued its dominance by racing away from the chasing pack after collecting 112, almost three times more than second placed South Korea who have 44.
Malaysia with three gold, nine silver, nine bronze slipped to 14th spot on the medal tally after finishing in 13th spot yesterday.
