INCHEON, Sept 26 — The strong combination of Shalin Zulkifli and Sin Li Jane finally ended Malaysia’s medal drought at the national tenpin bowling camp when they garnered the silver medal in the women’s doubles event at the Anyang Hogye Gymnasium near here today.
They collected the second highest points with 2,518 pins, behind gold medal winners Son Yunhee/Lee Lee Nayoung of South Korea who amassed 2,553 pins.
The bronze medal also went to South Korea, with Lee Yeongseung/Jung Dawun garnering 2,462 pins.
Shalin said she and Sin had worked hard to contribute a medal for the country after failing to start well at two early competitions.
“The second block of the match in the evening stressed me out a bit when many participants showed good performances but we were lucky to grab the silver,” said Shalin who was ahead of other participants during the first block of the competition in the morning.
The former Asian number one said she did not like to perform in the first block as she had to wait in full trepidation, watching other athletes performing in the evening without doing anything to maintain her position at the top.
“Sin and I have done our best in the first block, in the hope that the points collected could not be outdone by the others, but we had to be satisfied with the silver medal when the South Korean doubles were able to overtake us in the evening,” she said.
Meanwhile, Sin said she did not set any medal target for the event but had endeavoured to do her best.
“Anything can happen in a championship because the participants do not know their fate until it is over,” she added.
Malaysia’s best achievement in the women’s doubles was during the Busan edition in South Korea in 2002 when Sarah Yap/Wendy Chai won the gold medal.
Meanwhile, Shalin, who also took part in the edition also contributed a gold medal via the Women’s Masters. — Bernama
