KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Malaysia put in a pathetic display in their 6-2 loss to South Africa in the 11th place play-off of the World Cup at Kyocera Stadium, The Hague, Netherlands yesterday night.
Malaysia coach Muhammad Dhaarma Raj Abdullah’s squad ended the campaign in last spot, the worst showing by Malaysia in six World Cups.
Malaysia ended the campaign at the foot of Group A without any points to show after losing all five matches played.
In the match against South Africa, Malaysia started brighter when Muhammad Firhan Ashaari opened scoring in the 26th minute.
South Africa replied via Justin Reid-Ross in the 43rd minute followed by penalty corners converted by Lloyd Norris-Jones in the 45th dan 48th minutes.
Lloyd Norris-Jones scored the fourth goal two minutes later.
Skipper Austin Smith got the fifth goal in the 63rd minute before Jean-Pierre de Voux scored the sixth goal in the 68th minute.
Malaysia got the second goal when skipper Mohd Shahrun Nabil Abdullah scored just one minute later.
South Africa ended the campaign bottom of Group B, collecting one point from one draw and four losses. — Bernama
