LONDON, May 18 — Steven Gerrard is still Roy Hodgson’s choice as England captain, but is leaving it up to the player to decide his international future. The Guardian reported that Hodgson said he did not think Gerrard would bring ‘negative vibes’ following Liverpool failing to win the Premier League title.
Hodgson named his 23-man squad and seven standby players for the World Cup last Monday, singling out Gerrard as captain and Frank Lampard as his deputy.
England’s coach said that he had preliminary discussions with Gerrard over his future role, saying that he would like him to go on beyond this World Cup.
Hodgson praised Gerrard, saying that he was very strong mentally and “cares desperately about Liverpool” while also caring equally as much about England.
