Nicol through, Wee Wern eliminated from British Open

KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 — National squash queen and world number one player, Datuk Nicol David moved closer ahead of clinching her fifth British Open as she cruised into the semi-final of the tournament held at the Sports Arena in University of Hull, England.

The top seed only took 39 minutes to dispatch 11th seed, Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy with a 11-7, 12-10 and 11-4 win in the quarter-final match held early today, according to the tournament’s website www.allambritishopensquash.com.

Nicol who clinched the British Open four times -- 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2012 will meet host player, Alison Water in the semi-final match, later today.

Alison, the fifth seed had earlier pulled off a major upset by outclassing fourth seed, Joelle King of New Zealand;11-4, 8-11, 11-5, 11-1 in the 46-minute match.

It was however a different ball game for national number two, Low Wee Wern who crashed out from the tournament after losing 5-11, 6-11 and 8-11 against world number three, Raneem El Weleily of Egypt.

“Played better in the third game but Raneem was very sharp. Overall, pleased at making the quarterfinals of the British Open for the first time and hopefully more to come.
