JAKARTA, April 1 — The Asean Football Federation (AFF) annual congress in Medan, Sumatra ended Sunday with a proposal for Asean to bid for the 2034 World Cup.
Its secretary-general, Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad said hosting the World Cup would be an important development among AFF member countries.
“The AFF is committed in bidding for the 2034 World Cup. We have yet to select the host nation (for the championship),” Azzuddin as quoted by Jakarta Post as saying Yesterday.
“This proposal is essential toward the development of football in every country within the AFF in order for us to compete with other countries especially those in Europe and South America,” he added.
The 11th annual congress was held from Friday until Sunday with the participation of 12 countries, namely Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Timor Leste, and Australia.
Meanwhile, Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) chairman Djohar Arifin Husein said apart from the proposal to bid for the World Cup, the congress also decided that the AFF Under-19 Women’s Championship would be held in Thailand in Thailand, the AFF Futsal Championship in Malaysia in September and the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup starting October 12. — Bernama
