KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 27 — The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) are ready to consider former France international Marcel Desailly’s offer to coach the national team.

FAM Deputy President Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said if Desailly was really keen, the FAM would consider the World Cup winning player's request, just like other candidates.

“Desailly is among a long list of aspiring candidates for the job of national coach but when considering his experience in coaching, he may not match most of the candidates.

“However, he was a formidable player with vast experience and we have no doubt about his ability to be a good coach. Just that we need a very experienced coach for the job,” he told reporters at the launch of a book titled ‘Beyond Dreams’ authored by former Asian Football Confederation (AFC) secretary-general Datuk Dr Peter Velappan, at Wisma OCM here today.

Yesterday, Bernama reported that Desailly was keen to coach the Malaysian national team in the future since the post remains vacant after former coach Datuk K. Rajagobal’s contract which expired on Dec 31, was not extended by the FAM.

Meanwhile, asked if he was willing to consider contesting the post of FAM president for the 2014-2018 term, Tengku Abdullah said he would think about it only if he was nominated and supported by the affiliates and delegates.

“As the Deputy President, if anyone feels I deserve to be the President of FAM, I will consider. In fact, I had only intended to defend the post of Deputy President for the time being,” he said.

Tengku Abdullah and the Tengku Mahkota of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim who is also the Johor Football Association (PBNJ) President, have emerged as the most popular candidates for the post of FAM President, especially with the FAM Congress scheduled on May 25.

Kelantan Football Association (KAFA) advisor Tan Sri Annuar Musa had recently said Tunku Ismail would be the most suitable candidate to fill the post of FAM President which is currently held by the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah who is also Tengku Abdullah’s father. — Bernama
