KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 30 —Terengganu hope to defend its supremacy in track and field events at the SUKMA by taking a big bite at the number of gold medals offered in the Perlis SUKMA which is scheduled in May.

Terengganu athletics team manager Kama Rezuan Kamaruddin, the son of former Olympians Kamaruddin Maidin and Rajemah Sheikh Ahmad said Terengganu would try to defend the six gold medals won at the Pahang SUKMA two years ago.

“Will defend all the six gold medals and will strive to increase our gold medal tally at the coming SUKMA,” he told Bernama, here, today.

He said Terengganu had won the gold in the men’s 100m, men’s 110m hurdles, men’s 4X400m, women’s 400m hurdles, women’s 4X100m and women’s 4X400m.

He said Terengganu had ruled the women’s 4X400m event since 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012 and would seek to retain its dominance in Perlis.

Kama Rezuan, a former hurdler just like his father, said most of the athletes who had represented Terengganu at the last SUKMA were still eligible to participate in Perlis this year.

“Our athletics team will comprise 30 athletes, including 15 women,” he said.  He said the athletes were undergoing intensive training in Gong Badak, Sekolah Menengah Sultan Sulaiman, here and at Sekolah Sukan Bukit Nenas in Setiu.

“For those studying at the Bukit Jalil Sports School, we also conduct training there,” he said.

Kama Rezuan also said Terengganu may take part in a pre-SUKMA event in Perlis to be held in March, to test the performance of the athletes. — Bernama
