NAYPYITAW, Dec 19 — Gavin Kyle Green came that close to clinching the gold medal in golf only to be outdone by Thai golfer Danthai Boonma in a sudden death play-off in the Myanmar SEA Games at the Royal Myanmar Golf Club here today.
Gavin's four-under par 68 in today's final round put both players tied at 278 overall, forcing the play-off.
The Thai shot a birdie on the very first hole to clinch the gold medal.
"I played well but he was better," said Gavin after the tense play-off.
In the team event, the national squad comprising Gavin, Mohd Wafiyuddin Abdul Manaf, Muhammad Wafiyuddin Abdul Manaf,Low Khai Jei and Abel Tam Kwang Yuan only managed the bronze after finishing with an overall score of 848 strokes (four rounds).
Thailand took the gold with an overall score of 838 strokes while hosts Myanmar the silver with 846 strokes.
In the women's category, Michelle Koh was the best Malaysian finisher, coming in fifth place with 219 strokes overall while compatriots Nur Durriyah Damian and Vivienne Chin shot 227 strokes and 230 strokes to finish 10th and 14th respectively (the women players only played three rounds). — Bernama
