PETALING JAYA, Dec 9 — National cyclist Josiah Ng’s dreams of competing in the World Championships in February crashed after he suffered a serious injury at the World Cup in Aguascalientes, Mexico yesterday.
According to national coach John Beasley, Josiah was racing in Heat 2 of the Keirin event when he and several other riders crashed on the track.
“Josiah’s not too good. He’s suffered two broken ribs, a punctured lung and broke his right clavicle (collarbone). I am not too sure how long it will be before we can travel back.
“He will be a sore boy for a while.”
It was the same collarbone Josiah broke during the World Championships in Mallorca, Spain in 2007. He even had a broken tooth lodged in his throat.
Beasley said Josiah was unconscious and not breathing when he got to him at the track. Josiah was rushed to the CMQ MCA Hospital near Aguascalientes.
“Our worst fears of a fractured skull was erased. It looks like the end of this season for him, we will just let him fully recover,” Beasley added.
Josiah, however, was in good spirits as evident in a video recording posted on his Facebook page.
Malaysian National Cycling Federation deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad said Josiah had a good chance of competing in the World Championships in Cali, Colombia but for the accident.
“He will surely miss the next World Cup (Jan 17-19) which will also be held in Mexico. He will still have a good chances to booking a berth for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil as the qualifiers will only be held after this season ends (in March, 2014),” said Naim.
“We have requested help from the Malaysian embassy in Mexico to ensure Josiah gets the best treatment and we hope he will have a speedy recovery.”
On Friday, Josiah and Azizulhasni Awang were the first Malaysians to dip under 10 seconds in the men’s sprint qualifiers.
Azizulhasni clocked 9.854s while Josiah posted 9.963s.
