Kelantan go down on own turf

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 — Defending champions Kelantan suffered a shock defeat to Negeri Sembilan in Group C in the Malaysia Cup competition, going down 2-3 on their own turf, the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium in Kota Baru last night.

The second win by Negeri Sembilan enabled them to knock off Pahang from the top of the group after collecting seven points overall while Kelantan are languishing in third spot on five points with two rounds of matches to go in the group stage.

In tonight’s match, The Red Warriors goals were scored by Indra Putra Mahayuddin in the 37th minute and Ahmad Fakri Saarani (48th) while S.Sivanesan (12th) and Fabio Leandro Barbosa (57th, 77th) netted for the visitors.

In another Group C match, Terengganu kept their quarter-final hopes alive when they edged Pahang 2-1 at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium, Kuala Terengganu.

The Turtles goals were contributed by Jean-Emmanuel Effa Owona (63rd) and Khairul Ramadhan Zauwawi (injury time of second half) while Azamuddin Mohd Akil scored the consolation goal for the Elephants in the 68th minute.

In Group B, glamorous side Johor Darul Takzim (Johor DT) were humiliated by T-Team, losing 1-2 at the Tan Sri Hassan Yunos Stadium, Larkin.

National striker Norshahrul Idlan Talaha put the hosts ahead in the 43rd minute but goals by Abdul Latiff Suhaimi and George Boateng in the 81st minute and injury time ensured T-Team went home with three full points.

Felda United FC, meanwhile, chalked their first win in Group B when they edged Selangor PKNS FC at the Temerloh Mini-Stadium.

The Settlers import striker Emmanuel Mazowa scored the solitary goal in the 40th minute.

In Group A, Armed Forces trounced Johor FA 4-1 at the Selayang Stadium.

The Gladiators four goals came through Bruno Sebastian Martelotto (40th, 90+1’), Marlon Alex James (77th) and Venice Elphi (81st) while Johor FA’s was contributed by Mohd Alif Yusof in the 88th minute.

Selangor on the other hand are virtually out of the competition after only managing a 1-1 draw with Sime Darby FC at the Shah Alam Stadium, also in Group A.

The Red Giants’ Liberian import Francis Forkey Doe had put them ahead in the last minute of the first half only to see the advantage neutralised by Sime’s Karlo Primorac in the 78th minute.

In Group  D, Premier League champions Sarawak continued their winning ways by demolishing Kedah 4-0 at Stadium Negeri, Kuching.

The ‘Ngap Sayot’ squad’s goals were netted by  Zamri Morshidi (55th), Muamer Salibasic (62nd) and Bobby Gonzales (74th, 78th).

In the other Group D match, Super League champions Lions XII of Singapore fell 1-2 to Perak at the Jalan Besar Stadium, Singapore. – Bernama
