SEPANG, July 24 — After a decade of thrills, spills and excitement, the 12-hour Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER) would take another transformation this year, said Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chairman Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir.
“The new collaboration is aimed at helping to elevate MMER status, which has been synonymous with the progress and the growing stature of the sport.
“Together with PPM, we aim to build on the past success and reputation of the 12-hour race and take it forward to a new level of local and international recognition to make it the leading endurance race in the region,” he added.
Mokhzani said this in his speech at the official launch of the event, and breaking of fast with orphans from the Baitus Sakinah Wal Mahabbah orphanage at the SIC last night.
Present were PPM director Ian Ross Geekie, SIC chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Razlan Ahmad Razali and Moto3 rider Muhammad Zulfahmi Khairuddin.
“In injecting further excitement to MMER, SIC will also introduce new categories and a revised qualifying format. We expect over 40 participants to join this year’s race,” said Mokhzani.
Meanwhile, Geekie noted that the endurance race was important to Malaysia’s motorsport fratenity, and that in years to come, it would be well known internationally.
“The event has grown from strength to strength, and has become popular among Malaysians and others in the region. We’ll make the event as a must in the world motorsports calendar.
“To date, 33 teams have confirmed participation and we hope to have a bigger number this year. Besides the main event, we have also lined up support races, prior to the event,” he said.
He noted that among the early entries for this year’s MMER was former F1 driver Mika Salo, who had confirmed participation with the Ferrari AF Corse Racing Team. – Bernama
