SINGAPORE, Oct 29 — A woman who drank alcohol at home before heading to a nightspot was fined S$2,500 today for molesting one of its female workers, The Straits Times reported.
According to the Singapore daily, Sonik Archana Susheel, 32, an Indian national, pleaded guilty to outraging the modesty of the 20-year-old victim.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Yohanes Ng told the court that Sonik went to the downtown nightspot at around 11pm on March 13 to meet a friend and drank more alcohol there, the report said.
She was dancing alone at around 12.30am when the victim walked past, The Straits Times reported.
The DPP said the victim nearly collided with Sonik, who was dancing erratically, before Sonik touched the victim’s buttocks and pushed her stomach area.
Court documents stated that the entire interaction lasted no more than five seconds, according to the report.
The victim turned towards Sonik and uttered an expletive, while Sonik continued dancing before walking away.
The daily reported that the upset victim sought help from the nightspot’s bouncers, and her superiors told her to rest. Police arrested Sonik soon after.
Sonik was represented by lawyer Ariffin Sha, and the court heard that the offence was not premeditated, The Straits Times said.
Under Singapore law, those convicted of molestation can be jailed for up to two years, fined, caned, or receive any combination of these punishments. Women are exempted from caning.
