SINGAPORE, Sept 18 — Two Malaysians were arrested at Singapore’s Tuas Checkpoint for attempting to smuggle more than 10 kilogrammes of cannabis worth over S$203,000 (RM649,032) into the republic by hiding the drugs in their motorcycle.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) in a statement today said the 36-year-old man and 35-year-old woman were stopped upon arriving at the checkpoint on Sept 15 on a Malaysia-registered motorcycle following information received from the ICA’s Integrated Targeting Centre.

In the course of the checks, ICA officers uncovered four bundles of vegetable matter believed to be controlled drugs underneath the motorcycle seat.

Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers were alerted and further checks uncovered six more bundles of vegetable matter believed to be controlled drugs in a black haversack on the motorcycle handlebar.

ICA said the seized bundles contained a total of about 10,164 grammes of cannabis, which could potentially feed the addiction of about 1,450 abusers for a week.

“Investigations are ongoing,” said ICA.

Under Section 7 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973, those who import into or export from Singapore more than 500 grammes of cannabis may face the death penalty. — Bernama
