SINGAPORE, Sept 11 — Sustaining strong and forward-looking Malaysia-Singapore relations is crucial to the resilience of both countries amid an increasingly challenging and unpredictable global environment, said High Commissioner of Malaysia to Singapore Datin Paduka Anizan Siti Hajjar Adnin.

She said Malaysia and Singapore have an opportunity to strengthen their bilateral relationship over the next decade through closer economic integration, better connectivity and stronger people-to-people ties.

She said both countries share a common interest in a region where international law is respected, sovereignty is upheld, freedom of navigation is protected and disputes are resolved peacefully.

“Therefore, Malaysia looks forward to Singapore’s upcoming Asean Chairmanship in 2027, which is poised to continue the excellent work being done by the Philippines this year,” she said during the 2026 National Day and Malaysia Day reception, here yesterday. 

Also present was Singapore Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat along with 600 dignitaries from various diplomatic missions, as well as Malaysians living in Singapore.

Anizan said bilateral relations between the two countries are on a positive and constructive trajectory, with several key milestones on the horizon that will benefit their people and further strengthen economic integration.

These include the upcoming deployment of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link and the ongoing implementation of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

Meanwhile, Chee said Singapore values the close collaboration and partnership with Malaysia and the continuous exchange of ideas to build on the strong momentum of cooperation.

He noted that the Singapore-Malaysia relations are about the people, and that both neighbouring nations have much to learn from each other.

“Our cities face many similar challenges in how to plan for growth, improve connectivity, manage water and flood risks, as well as how to build liveable and sustainable communities.

“By exchanging best practices, sharing our experiences and importantly working together on practical solutions, we can achieve better outcomes for our people,” he said. — Bernama
