SINGAPORE, Aug 28 — More than 5,100 people were injured or killed on Singapore’s roads in the first half (1H) of this year, a 3.6 per cent increase from the same period last year, even as fatal accidents fell by about 23 per cent.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF), in its Mid-Year Road Traffic 2026 report, said the total number of injured persons and fatalities rose by 3.6 per cent to 5,151 in 1H 2026 compared to 4,973 in the same period last year.

The SPF said the number of traffic accidents involving injuries and fatalities rose by 2.7 per cent to 3,929 in 1H 2026 from 3,826 previously.

However, fatal accidents fell by 23.1 per cent to 60 in 1H 2026 from 78 previously, while fatalities fell by 22.8 per cent to 61 from 79, due to fewer fatalities among motorcyclists and pillion riders.

“While the number of fatal accidents and fatalities decreased in 1H 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, the overall traffic situation continues to be worrying.

“Motorcyclists, pillion riders, and elderly pedestrians also continue to be the most vulnerable road user groups, and remain over-represented in traffic fatalities,” it said on Friday.

Commander of the Traffic Police SAC Serene Chiu said the upward trend in road traffic accidents and casualties over the past few years was a stark reminder that much more needed to be done for road safety.

“Vulnerable road users, particularly motorcyclists and elderly pedestrians, continue to be disproportionately represented in traffic fatalities.

“Traffic Police will continue to strengthen our enforcement capabilities and work closely with our partners and the community to improve road user behaviour and enhance road safety,” she said. — Bernama
