SINGAPORE, July 22 — A deadly confrontation between two residents of a Housing Board block in Lengkok Bahru has resulted in a 59-year-old man being formally accused of murder.

According to The Straits Times, the accused, Ng Swee Seng, appeared before the State Courts via video link yesterday, where he was charged with causing the death of his neighbour, 59-year-old Thiyagarajan Karunakaran. The alleged incident took place on July 20 at Block 55, situated in the Redhill vicinity.

According to police reports, emergency calls were received around 5pm that day. Upon reaching the scene, officers discovered Thiyagarajan unconscious at the 16th-floor lift landing. He was swiftly conveyed to the National University Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

A Straits Times check of the block the following morning revealed blood traces and a bloody shoeprint scattered along the corridor of the same floor. Speaking to reporters, a resident who has lived in the block for approximately four years noted that the two men stayed in separate units, with only a few doors separating their flats.

During the court proceedings yesterday, Ng offered a brief remark regarding the incident, stating: “If I catch a sound, I will hurl abuse… I responded because I caught a noise.” The judge has since adjourned the case, with the next hearing slated for August 12.

Under Singapore’s penal code, a murder conviction carries a mandatory death sentence.
