SINGAPORE, June 26 — Workers’ Party (WP) cadres are expected to decide on June 28 whether party chief Pritam Singh will continue leading the opposition party, amid reported internal moves by a group seeking leadership change.

According to The Straits Times, a faction of cadres is planning to challenge Singh at the party’s internal elections following growing dissatisfaction linked to his conviction for lying to a parliamentary committee, which was upheld by the High Court in December 2025.

The vote will take place during two meetings involving more than 100 cadres, who form the party’s inner circle, including a special conference requested by 25 members who have called for Singh to account for his actions and potentially step down.

This will be followed by the party’s biennial cadres’ conference, where the leadership team — including the secretary-general post — will be up for re-election.

Party insiders said potential challengers have been discussed, including senior MPs Gerald Giam, Dennis Tan, He Ting Ru and Jamus Lim, although none have confirmed they will run.

The outcome could depend on whether Singh faces a challenger and the margin of support he receives, with some cadres suggesting a strong result would discourage any leadership contest.

Singh has led the WP for eight years without opposition and will require a simple majority to retain his post.

Internal discussions also reflect wider concerns over party direction, including dissatisfaction linked to past controversies involving former MP Raeesah Khan and the WP’s performance in the 2025 general election.

However, Singh still retains support among some cadres and party veterans, who point to electoral gains under his leadership, including the 2020 Sengkang GRC win and improved vote share in 2025.

The June 28 meetings are expected to be closely watched as they may determine both the WP’s leadership direction and internal cohesion moving forward.
