SINGAPORE, June 13 — A 35-year-old woman has been jailed for five weeks after falsely telling police that her ex-boyfriend had raped her following consensual sex.

Liau Wan Ting was convicted on June 12 of providing false information to a police officer after she initially stood by the allegation during questioning, The Straits Times reported yesterday.

Court proceedings showed the claim arose after consensual sexual activity between Liau and her ex-boyfriend, identified only as A1 under a gag order.

The pair met in 2024 via TikTok, began a relationship that year, and continued seeing each other after breaking up in October 2025.

On January 7, 2026, Liau contacted A1 asking him to pick her up after drinking with friends, and the pair later went to his home where they had sex.

She later asked her sister-in-law whether the encounter could amount to rape, citing concerns over pregnancy after her birth control patch had expired.

Despite being advised on consent, Liau proceeded to lodge a police report at Yishun Neighbourhood Police Centre on the same day.

She maintained the allegation when speaking to multiple officers before later admitting in a recorded statement that the sex had been consensual.

She said she lied because she feared being jailed for making a false report.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kimberly Boo said false rape allegations are “particularly egregious” as they waste public resources, cause distress to innocent parties and undermine confidence in genuine victims.

The court was told that giving false information to a public servant carries a penalty of up to two years’ jail, a fine, or both.
