SINGAPORE, Oct 1 — Singapore police are looking into what looks like a case of unauthorised fishing at Sentosa, involving sharks.

The Straits Times reported that a video has been circulating on Xiaohongshu and then posted to Reddit’s r/singaporehappenings on September 29.

In the video a woman can be seen with a fishing road in Sentosa island and then cutting to a shark on a wooden floorboard, and later two sharks that look like young blacktip reef sharks are seen on the floorboard.

The Sentosa Development Corporation has made a police report about the video and told The Straits Times: “Fishing, poaching or any act causing disturbance or harm to wildlife in Sentosa is strictly prohibited, to protect the biodiversity and natural environment of the island as well as the safety of our guests.”

Blacktip reef sharks are native to Singapore and adult specimens can grow up to 1.6 metres though lengths of 2.9 metres have also been recorded.

Commonly found in shallow coastal waters they are not considered a threat to humans.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List lists them as a “vulnerable” species due to overfishing, climate change and the effects of pollution.
