SINGAPORE, Sept 12 — A 70-year-old man was jailed for two weeks here after a rash act while driving caused his wife to fall and suffer severe head injuries that left her bed-bound.

The victim, aged 61, was left bed-bound, unable to comprehend commands, and reliant on a nasogastric tube for long-term milk feeds, The Straits Times reported.

Alias Haji Abbas was sentenced to two weeks’ jail yesterday after pleading guilty to causing grievous hurt by a rash act that endangered his wife’s life.

The incident began on April 12, 2024, when Alias, frustrated by his wife’s constant nagging, left their Woodlands home and drove to Sembawang Park to cool down.

He tried to rest in his car but woke up around 2am when his phone kept ringing, prompting him to drive back home.

Upon nearing home, he saw his wife waiting at the carpark entrance and, fearing a scene, avoided her twice before eventually finding a parking space at 3.50am.

As Alias reversed into the spot, his wife tried to open the locked driver’s door and banged on the window when she could not get in.

Ignoring her, Alias drove forward, hitting his wife with the right side of the car and causing her to fall to the ground before he drove off.

Bystanders rushed to help the woman, who was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital with a skull fracture and brain bleeding that required emergency surgery.

The court heard that Alias, a welder and first-time offender, was remorseful and continues to pay for his wife’s medical expenses, but the judge still imposed a two-week jail term despite pleas for leniency.
