SINGAPORE, July 5 — A fire about the size of a football field engulfed a chemical wholesale factory in Tuas early today, taking the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) about four hours to put out the flames.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday morning, SCDF said that it was alerted to the fire at 11 Tuas Link 1 at about 2.05am.

A total of 30 emergency vehicles and about 100 personnel were dispatched to restrict the fire from spreading.

The blaze was brought under control at about 6.15am and has since been extinguished.

One firefighter was taken to the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital as he experienced giddiness during the firefighting operation.

The firefighter was conscious and stable when transported to the hospital and has since been discharged and will be given time to rest.

"SCDF will continue to check on his well-being,” the force added in its post.

The factory building is occupied by Megachem, a wholesaler and distributor of chemicals.

"At the height of the firefighting operation, SCDF firefighters deployed five water and foam jets and two Unmanned Firefighting Machines,” SCDF said.

Firefighters are currently carrying out damping down operations to prevent the potential rekindling of the fire.

Earlier this morning, SMRT wrote on its Facebook page that train services between Tuas Link and Tuas West Road were disrupted for close to two hours due to the fire. Train services were finally resumed at 7.21am. — TODAY
