TOKYO, Nov 5 — Fans of Mashle: Magic and Muscles finally have their first look at the franchise's highly anticipated live-action adaptation, with Japanese star Mackenyu officially announced as the actor who will bring protagonist Mash Burnedead to life on the big screen.
The film is scheduled to premiere in Japan on 19 March 2027, with veteran manga adaptation director Yuichi Fukuda at the helm.
Known internationally for his role as Roronoa Zoro in Netflix's live-action One Piece, Mackenyu appears to be a natural fit for Mash, a character whose overwhelming physical strength allows him to survive in a world where magical ability determines social status.
According to reports accompanying the announcement, the actor spent approximately three years preparing physically for the role after receiving the offer, underscoring the production's commitment to faithfully adapting the beloved manga.
The newly released teaser offers a glimpse of Mackenyu in costume, complete with Mash's signature facial marking and Easton Magic Academy uniform.
The footage also highlights the character's trademark athleticism, including scenes showcasing the extraordinary muscle power that defines the series.
Director Yuichi Fukuda, whose previous live-action credits include Gintama and several other manga adaptations, revealed that Mackenyu was one of his first choices after the project received approval.
Fukuda described the film as featuring one of the strongest casts he has assembled, while expressing confidence in Mackenyu's ability to embody the unique balance of comedy, action and stoic charisma that has made Mash such a fan favourite.
Originally created by Hajime Komoto, Mashle: Magic and Muscles was serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2020 to 2023. The story follows Mash Burnedead, a young man born without magical powers in a society where magic determines a person's worth.
To compensate, Mash develops superhuman physical strength, using brute force to overcome magical obstacles and challenge the prejudices of the wizarding world. The manga's blend of parody, action and deadpan humour helped it become a global hit, with more than 12 million copies in circulation worldwide.
The live-action film is being produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, Fuji Television, and production company CREDEUS, with Toho handling distribution in Japan.
With Mackenyu's track record in adaptations such as One Piece, Rurouni Kenshin, and Fullmetal Alchemist, expectations are already high. If the first teaser is any indication, the live-action Mashle aims to capture the blend of absurd comedy and explosive action that made the original manga and anime so successful.
For fans wondering whether anyone could convincingly portray a teenager who defeats powerful wizards through pure muscle, the filmmakers appear to believe they have found their answer in Mackenyu.
