KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 — What if some of pop culture’s most famous rivals settled their differences in the Street Fighter arena?

As fans gear up for the upcoming live-action Street Fighter film, pixel artist Jude Buffum has been drawing attention with artwork reimagining familiar characters in the style of the classic fighting game.

Shared on the official Street Fighter movie Instagram account, the pixel art places characters from different franchises in one-on-one face-offs inspired by the game’s iconic combat screens.

Among the match-ups are Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow from the G.I. Joe franchise, as well as Transformers arch-enemies Optimus Prime and Megatron.

The artwork also imagines a showdown between Leonardo and Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT), bringing the brothers’ rivalry into the Street Fighter universe.

Even SpongeBob SquarePants gets a fighting-game twist, with SpongeBob and his longtime nemesis Plankton going head-to-head in the familiar arcade-style format.

The crossovers offer a playful take on the rivalries that have kept audiences invested in these franchises, from bitter enemies and competing warriors to brothers who often find themselves on opposing sides.

Buffum’s artwork draws on the retro pixel aesthetic associated with classic arcade games, recreating the face-off format that precedes a fight in Street Fighter.

The illustrations have prompted fans to call for the match-ups to become actual games, with some expressing excitement over the unlikely combinations.

One commenter reacting to the G.I. Joe artwork wrote: “Don’t be teasing us with this awesome-looking game that we probably won’t get!”

The Transformers illustration also drew calls for a fighting game, with one commenter saying: “We need this as a fighting video game,” while another said it reminded them of a classic comic featuring the characters.

Meanwhile, the TMNT crossover prompted speculation about a possible collaboration, with one fan asking: “TMNT vs Street Fighter movie confirmed?”

The SpongeBob illustration proved equally appealing to fans, with one commenter writing: “This actually looks like one of those SpongeBob flash games and I absolutely want more of this now.”

Another reaction to the Instagram posts summed up the excitement with: “Marketing is going crazy.”

The individual posts have attracted between 1,000 and 11,000 likes, reflecting the interest generated by the crossovers.

The artwork arrives ahead of the new film’s theatrical release on October 15 in Malaysia and October 16 in other markets.

The upcoming adaptation stars Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, and Callina Liang as Chun-Li, alongside Jason Momoa as Blanka and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog.

The storyline is set in 1993, where estranged fighters Ryu and Ken Masters are recruited by Chun-Li to enter the next World Warrior Tournament.

Unbeknownst to them, this tournament will force the two fighters to face each other and their demons.

The film brings Capcom’s long-running fighting game series to the big screen once again, introducing its characters and martial arts rivalries to audiences beyond the gaming community.
